were created for the sole purpose of being hated by the audience for their reprehensible behavior. Often times, the character's behavior can be so wretched that even their own actors and creators can end up hating them.
While Villains who are Villains Benchmarks are nowhere near as evil as villains who are Pure Evil, Near Pure Evil or Inconsistently Heinous, they can still be considered a hate sink if their negative behavior and activities outweigh any redeemable or mitigating factors they may have. Often times, many villainous benchmark's only mitigating factor is that they fail the high heinous standards of the work that they're in despite passing the general standard.
Aria, Barkis Bittern, Blaire Lily, Brian Jeremy, Donovan, Dr. Heinemann, Kaigaku, Eddy's Brother, Ernesto de la Cruz, Jeffery Fecalman, Joe Pratt, Marko Hoxha, Percy Wetmore, Tomoo, and Zack Powers are prime examples of Villainous Benchmark Hate Sinks.
While hate sinks almost never qualify as Laughably Evil, the following exceptions can be made if:
- The villain in question was written to be hated by the audience but ended up being seen as genuinely funny (e.g. Preston Northwest, Ercole Visconti, Chick Hicks,SMG3,Black Hat, Benedicit Arnold, and Miss Hattie).
- The villain hides their abhorrent actions behind an amusing persona (e.g. Professor Marmalade, Aunt Spiker, Aunt Sponge, Muddy Grimes,Labby, Vukmir, and Mother Gothel).
- The villain started out as a genuinely funny character but ended up becoming darker as time went on or vice versa (e.g. Syn Shenron, Adolfo Pirelli,Sonic Exe, and NegaDuck).
- The villain has two different personalities, one of which is generally funny while the other has more deplorable traits.
- The villain is part of a much larger cast where the start out as objectionable in one appearance and amusing in a different appearance.
A villain hat's loathsome isn't automatically Laughably Evil if they're portrayed comedically on one occasion (e.g. Zack Powers and Brian Jeremy). Likewise, a villain that's amusing isn't automatically a Hate Sink if they briefly lose their comedic traits (e.g. Cartman,J, and Gaston).
NOTE: A villain cannot qualify to be a hate sink if the person who created them originally meant for them to be viewed as a tragic and three-dimensional character (e.g. Niles, Shadow Weaver, Frollo,Prince Hans, William Afton,Koba,Mr.McMahon,SCp-106, and Dio). Villainou can no longer apply here if they had detestable traits that were later removed and outweighed by their more entertaining elements, such as evil is cool and laughably evil (e.g. King,V, and Skitzo).
