Background:[]
Personality:[]
Melvin is a nerdy, intuitive, inventive, and courageous boy who is a human of the looney colony and wants to make a difference to his colony's way of life, but has a tendency to make things worse in the process. His inventions include a telescope created by wrapping a blade of grass around a dew drop; an automatic harvester; several items of traveler's gear; and the bird-shaped aircraft used to terrify the bullies. He is in love with Princess Tricia and he is great friends with Lottie, the Circus Clowns, and the Raspberries.
Appearance:[]
In the film, Melvin is an odd, inventive boy who is desperate to make a difference to his colony's way of life. He is also sweet to Princess Tricia and has a crush on her, but has a tendency of making things worse for himself. He does this by accidentally destroying the pile of food for the bullies, and then causing the leader, Sprouncer, to double the offering that has to be completed by the end of autumn. During his trial, the royal council reprimands him but quickly dissolves into an argument about what his punishment should be, each being rejected due to a past incident. However, Melvin suggests recruiting "bigger people" to help fight the bullies away.
After the royal council approves her idea (assuming that Melvin would not be around to cause any more trouble), Melvin leaves Looney Island and ventures to San Francisco (rubbish under a caravan), where she mistakes a recently fired circus troupe for warriors when some of them do an act based on Robin Hood. After Melvin returns to Looney Island with the circus troupe, he introduces the people to the troupe, but the troupe refuses to believe the reason Melvin has recruited them and fly across the stream from the Looney Island, with Melvin in pursuit. After a nearly fatal encounter with a pelican in which Lottie, Tricia's little sister, is saved by the circus clowns, Melvin is given the privilege to speak with Tricia herself, in which Tricia apologizes to Melvin for her misjudgment.
Learning from Tricia that Sprouncer is afraid of pelicans, Melvin comes up with an idea and tells the circus clowns that they will build a makeshift bird, controlled from the inside, to scare Sprouncer away, as long as they keep the idea secret from the rest of the colony. The idea goes into motion and, during the process, Melvin is shown acting awkwardly around Tricia and staring lovingly at her. After the bird is complete, the people celebrate and Tricia thanks Melvin for finding the "warrior people," getting their hairs tangled. But when the circus troupe's leader, Robert the Ringmaster, arrives at the island in search for them, Melvin's mistake is made public to the colony. An angry Tricia sees Melvin through his lies and has her banished, this time forever. Downhearted, Melvin leaves Looney Island with the circus troupe.
However, Lottie catches up with him and tells him that Sprouncer, who invaded the island with his bullies, will kill her mother, the Queen, after they have finished gathering food. The circus clowns suggest using the bird; however, Melvin comments that the bird is no good, much to their shock. Melvin is still ashamed of himself for being such a screw-up in the eyes of the colony and adds that the bird is a "guaranteed failure", just like him. The circus clowns remind Melvin that they have benefitted from him, and show that they're willing to help him save his colony. Lottie pleads with him, but Melvin, still doubtful of himself, refuses. Lottie brings her a rock and uses Melvin's words from the beginning from the film, Melvin regains his confidence and returns with the circus clowns to Looney Island, where he, Lottie, and the Raspberries climb aboard the "birds" and take control the model. The plan almost works, but the "birds" misdirects and crashes into the circus wagon, freeing Robert, who sees the "bird" and sets it on fire, prompting Melvin to crash-land the "bird."
Sprouncer, realizing that he has been tricked, orders his jackrabbit Jumper to savagely kick Melvin when Melvin confesses that he is responsible for the mayhem. Despite the injuries he has sustained, in the film's turning point, Melvin redeems himself and angrily stands up to Sprouncer, exposes his plot to kill the Queen, and states how people are not meant to serve bullies but are awesome humans who are strong in number. All the people, including Princess Tricia, are moved by Melvin's speech and realize what Sprouncer is putting them up to. Sprouncer knocks Melvin to the ground and is about to kill him, Tricia rushes in to stop him, tells him to leave, and helps Melvin up, commending her for his bravery.
Inspired by Melvin's speech, the people charge at Sprouncer's gang and scare the bullies away. Melvin and the other people seize Sprouncer and shove him into the circus cannon, but the rain falls, prompting the people to run for it, but Melvin is still injured and collapses while running. As Tricia rushes over to help Melvin up, a humiliated and vengeful Sprouncer then pops out of the cannon and takes Melvin hostage as he runs away. The circus clowns attempt to give chase but are unable to do so as they end up being stuck in a tree. However, Melvin is rescued by Tricia, whom he instructs her to take him across the stream to the other side where he has previously encountered the bird (knowing that the threat would never truly be over until Sprouncer himself was killed). As Tricia watches worriedly, Melvin faces Sprouncer, who backs him to the bird's nest and chokes him, vowing to be back with more bullies next season. At that moment, the bird is awakened by the confrontation; Sprouncer realizes too late that this bird is real and as it picks him up in its beak and that was the end of Sprouncer.
When spring comes, the circus clowns prepare to leave, and Robert the Ringmaster who accidentally aided Sprouncer and been severely punished for his actions asks Melvin if he is sure she can't come on a tour with them, to which Melvin answers that he belongs to the island, as well as with Tricia, who has since made up with him. The circus clowns thank Melvin and, along with the people, applaud at him for his heroism and intelligence. Tricia then approaches Melvin and kisses him, choosing him as her mate. Melvin then rushes over to help Lubenloch, who has emerged out of his dressing room, still a boy, but now with a small crown, into the air. As Melvin waves good-bye to his friends, he is taken to a tree root by Lottie and Tricia for a better view.
