Plot/Story[]

After failing to get food from a vending machine, a raccoon named Meeko attempts to steal food from a hibernating lion named Scar in an abandoned picnic spot in Indiana. When the food is ruined in the ensuing altercation, the plan goes awry. The disturbance wakes Scar, who nearly kills Meeko. The raccoon promises to replace Meeko's food in a week, but if Meeko doesn't succeed, Scar will kill him.

On the first day of spring, a family of woodland animals, headed by a crab named Sebastian, emerge from hibernation to find that most of the forest they formerly called home has been converted into a housing development and is divided from what little forest is left by a massive hedge. Meeko greets the gang and explains that by scavenging off the humans, they can have better nourishment. Sebastian is worried, but Meeko persuades the other animals to pilfer and hoard food and other human possessions, not realizing that his real goal is to give Scar the stash. The president of the local Home Owners Association, Mrs. Edwina Grunion, notices the animal infestation and employs David Styroker Brine, an exterminator.

The food is destroyed after being chased by an enthused Rottweiler named Charlie B. Barkin, while Meeko tries to stop a worried Sebastian from returning the pile of food to avoid David. Meeko holds Sebastian responsible for the devastation, and despite Sebastian's vain attempts to persuade his family not to follow Meeko for their own safety, they desert him in favor of Meeko. That evening, David sets up animal traps in Edwina's yard, one of which is a Depelter Turbo, a contraband device that is prohibited by federal law.

Meeko and Sebastian make up with each other. Meeko discovers that Edwina has purchased a sizable supply of food and that the animals have broken into her house to take it. This is on the night of the full moon. While the hippopotamus Gloria poses as a giraffe and seduces Edwina's pet giraffe Melman into letting her into the house through his collar, a squirrel named Surley manages to disable the Depelter Turbo. The animals load up on more food into another wagon, but before they go, Meeko notices a can of chips and decides she must retrieve them as requested by Scar. Meeko tries to explain why he needed the chips, but just before Edwina arrives downstairs and finds them, he confesses his genuine purpose. Meeko runs away with the meal. David, meantime, captures Sebastian and the other animals and drives them away in his truck.

A repentant Meeko orders the wagon to smash into David's van and knock David out as she delivers the food to Scar. She does this in an effort to rescue the animals. Scar becomes infuriated and attacks Meeko as a result. While Sebastian persuades the others to pardon Meeko, the triplets of rabbits drive the vehicle back to the neighborhood in an attempt to escape Scar. After the animals smash the vehicle into Mrs. Grunion's house and make their way back to the hedge, Scar, Mrs. Grunion, and an awakened David assault them from both sides of the hedge. Surley turns the Depelter Turbo back on. Meeko baits Scar into jumping over the hedge to devour him while wearing Sebastian's shell for protection. As a result, Scar, Mrs. Grunion, and David are apprehended in the Depelter Turbo.

Scar is sent to the Rocky Mountains by the local animal control agency, and Mrs. Grunion is sent into custody for having the Depelter Turbo. Charlie stops David's effort to flee. Meeko and Melman, who is still in love with Gloria even after discovering she is a hippo, return to the forest forever. Sebastian believes they have been without food for the winter for a full week when Surley eventually finds the nuts he had been saving for the previous winter, giving the animals more sustenance.
