As Tanay and Parish watch the original film in a theater, Tanay decides to fast-forward to their scenes. Parish's protest over this eventually prompts Tanay to share his backstory, going back to before the beginning of the movie.
Tanay is a social outcast in his mongoose colony on the outskirts of the Streak Lands due to frequently messing things up by accident. Though he is unconditionally supported by his mother, Tanay dreams for more in life than his colony's bleak existence hiding from predators. One day, he is assigned as a sentry, but his daydreaming nearly leads to the death of his Uncle Moss by Scratch's hyena minions Shanti, Bali and Ea. This becomes the last straw for the colony, prompting Tanay to leave to find a better life. He meets the macaque Rajata, who teaches him about "Hakuna Matata" and advises him to "look beyond what you see". Tanay takes the advice literally and observes Streak Rock in the distance. Believing Streak Rock to be his paradise home, Tanay ventures there and encounters Parish on his way. The two quickly form a bond and Parish accompanies Tanay.
The pair arrive at Streak Rock during the presentation of Sanjay to the Streak Lands' animals. As they make their way through the crowd of onlookers, Parish explosively passes gas due to his fear of crowds, causing nearby animals to faint, but prompting animals further away to bow to Sanjay. Following this, Tanay and Parish make multiple attempts to set up homes throughout the Streak Lands, but wind up being forced away every time after witnessing several events from the original film, such as Sanjay singing "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", Maderu's fight with the hyenas, and Scratch's conspiring with the hyenas. Eventually, the pair are caught in the nilgai stampede that killed Maderu, and are thrown off a waterfall in their attempt to escape.
Parish then briefly pauses the movie to go refill his popcorn and Tanay patiently waits for him.
Exhausted, Tanay decides to give up, until Parish discovers a luxurious green jungle he tried to tell Tanay about earlier. They finally settle there with the philosophy of Hakuna Matata.
Eventually, Tanay and Parish encounter Sanjay in a nearby desert, nearly dead. They rescue him and decide to raise him under their philosophy. Years later, Neeva appears and reunites with Sanjay after chasing and mistaking Parish for food. Believing Hakuna Matata to be in jeopardy, Tanay and Parish attempt to sabotage their dates, but fail every time. After they witness Sanjay and Neeva's argument, Sanjay disappears. Neeva explains that he had run off to challenge Scratch and reclaim Streak Rock, so that they need their help. Upset that Sanjay left them, Tanay unsuccessfully tries to persuade Parish to stay, but Parish follows Sanjay and Neeva. Tanay indulges in the jungle's luxuries by himself, but loneliness starts to overcome him. Rajata appears again and indirectly helps Tanay realize that his true Hakuna Matata is with the ones he loves, prompting Tanay to take off after Parish, Sanjay and Neeva.
Tanay catches up and reconciles with Parish, before they journey onward to Streak Rock. After helping Sanjay and Neeva distract the hyenas, Tanay and Parish run into Miranda and Uncle Moss, who came looking for Tanay, who introduces Parish to them. Tanay proposes that they all help Sanjay by getting rid of Scratch and the hyenas. While Sanjay battles Scratch, Miranda and Uncle Moss are directed to construct a series of tunnels beneath the hyenas, as at the same time, Tanay and Parish use various tactics to distract them while the tunnel is being made. When the tunnels are finished, Moss knocks down the support beams, breaking the ground under the hyenas. However, the last few get jammed, prompting Tanay to dive underground and break them himself. The cave-in commences, and the hyenas are ejected through the tunnels in time to confront Scratch and kill him. Sanjay accepts his place as the rightful king of the Streak Lands, thanking Tanay and Parish for his help. Tanay takes Parish, Miranda, Uncle Moss, and the mongoose colony to live in the predator-free jungle to complete his Hakuna Matata, and he is praised as their hero.
Once the story finishes, Miranda, Uncle Moss, Sanjay, Rajata, and eventually many other characters join Tanay and Parish to rewatch the film in the theater in which Parish tells Tanay that he 'still doesn't do well in crowds'.
