
Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743-July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States. He was also the second vice president (1797-1801) under John Adams, the first U.S. secretary of state (1789-1794) under George Washington, Ambassador of France (1784-1788), and Governor of Virginia (1779-1781).
