Plot[]
In a flashback, King Archimedes and Queen Adelaide have lost hope of their daughter, Princess Sunset Shimmer being freed from her curse after so many years of her being at the Giant’s Keep. Despite their deal with Gladys Sharp, they go to Skinner for help. He has a magical contract that will seemingly free Sunset from her curse if they give him the Kingdom of Far Far Away. However, it will actually make them disappear after signing it, killing them. When Archimedes is about to sign it, a messenger reveals that Sunset has been rescued, in accordance to Wolf’s deal with Mayor Muldoon. Ever since, Skinner has held a grudge against Wolf for ruining his plan to take over Far Far Away.
In the present, Wolf has grown tired of being a family man and a celebrity, longing for the days when he was feared and had privacy. While he is celebrating his children's first birthday in Far Far Away, a series of mishaps leaves Wolf so angry that he storms out in a rage and lashes out at Sunset. Having witnessed the outburst, Skinner follows Wolf into the forest and stages a scene of being in distress, prompting Wolf to help. Invited inside Skinner's carriage, Wolf laments that he is no longer a "real wolf". Skinner offers him a deal to receive a day as a "real wolf" in exchange for a day from his childhood. Wolf signs a contract fulfilling this wish, and is whisked away into an alternate reality.
Now feared by villagers, Wolf causes some mischief, until he discovers that Sunset is a fugitive and his swamp is deserted and desolate. Captured by witches, Wolf is taken to Skinner, who is now the king of Far Far Away. Skinner reveals to Wolf that he tricked Wolf into giving him the day he was born, meaning Wolf never existed in this altered timeline. Consequently, Archimedes and Adelaide were forced to give the kingdom to Skinner, which caused them to disappear. When the day ends, Wolf will cease to exist.
Wolf escapes Skinner's castle with Oscar, who is initially terrified of Wolf but befriends him after seeing him cry over his erased history. Oscar helps Wolf find a hidden exit clause; the contract can be nullified by "true love's kiss". The pair soon encounter a still-cursed Sunset leading an army of animals in a resistance against Skinner, and a lazy and overweight Spider in Ham being kept as Sunset's pet. Wolf unsuccessfully tries to woo Sunset, who has since lost hope of finding true love after not being rescued, and is too busy preparing an ambush on Skinner. Peter encourages Wolf to continue pursuing Sunset.
During the ambush, most of the animals are captured by the Black Butler, who was hired by Skinner, but Wolf and Sunset escape with Peter and Oscar. Wolf insists that Sunset kiss him, assuring her that it will fix everything; she reluctantly obliges, but nothing happens. Later on, Skinner publicly offers a wish to anyone who brings him Wolf, and after hearing this, Wolf turns himself in. Skinner is forced to grant Wolf's wish, and he uses it to free the other animals. As Wolf is locked up, Skinner reveals that Sunset had been captured and not released, since she is not "all animal". Oscar, Peter, and the freed animals storm the castle; they capture Skinner and defeat his witch army, while Wolf and Sunset take down Mount Lady.
As the sun rises, Wolf begins to fade from existence, but Sunset, having fallen in love with him, kisses him before he disappears. Seeing that she is still a fox in the sunlight, Sunset realizes that her curse was broken and that she has assumed "love's true form". The alternate reality disintegrates, making everyone disappear, and Wolf finds himself transported back to the original timeline at the moment before he lost his temper at the party. Instead of lashing out, Wolf embraces his family and friends with a newfound appreciation for them. Later, Wolf hosts a party in his swamp with his friends, family, and the other animals. Wolf arranged for Skinner to be imprisoned in a cage for the rest of his life.
